Bluetooth is a low powered radio technology that has been developed to replace the wires that are currently needed to connect devices (for example a personal hands-free kit to a mobile phone) and to replace infra-red (for example a mobile phone to PDA or laptop).
"Bluetooth" equipped mobile devices communicate at data speeds of up to 720kbps at ranges of
up to 10 metres. This means that if two devices have "Bluetooth" they can communicate without
wires and without the need for "line-of-site" working.Bluetooth is also secure since it operates across 76 frequencies and "hops" across these frequencies 1600 times per second. A Bluetooth enabled device is capable of working with up to 8 other devices but it is important to realise that this can only be achieved one device at a time. Clearly a major convenience of using a Bluetooth enabled devices is that it removes the need to struggle with cumbersome leads and avoids the inconvenience of having to work "line-of-site" with infra-red. So what is all of this technology leading to and will people be prepared to pay for it?
