Mobile Data - Circuit Switched Data (CSD)

This was the original data format used on cellular networks and simply described means that the user makes a phone call, but rather that relay voice, data signals are passed from "end-to-end"; like a phone call the user pays for the duration of the call.

All GSM mobile networks support data. Quite reasonably, few people are aware that during a call on a mobile phone, the handset is only transmitting or receiving your call for 1/8th of the time.
To increase the capacity on each precious radio channel, all GSM networks use this TDMA signaling to divide each channel into 8 time slots to carry calls.
