This is the latest development in mobile messaging and makes use of both WAP and GPRS. The
refreshing news is that our industry seems to be learning not to major on acronyms and the
brilliance of the technology but to major on what each service will deliver.Following their lead, MMS will allow colour images (including photographs), audio & video files to be sent and received as easily as we currently send e-mails and SMS text messages. Clearly this will need support by both the mobile networks and specially developed mobile phones. Care needs to be taken when choosing a handset for use with these services since not all MMS enabled phones are capable of supporting the full range of MMS services. For example, some handsets can only receive audio files (polyphonic ring-tones) and cannot send MMS, whilst others can send photos and graphics but not audio files. Always check that the handset of your choice can deliver all of the services you need. Will a user need to have an MMS capable handset to take advantage of the service? The answer is no. To send an MMS message will obviously require the use of such a handset but the service has been developed to allow users of non-MMS (legacy) handsets to receive an SMS text message notifying them that an MMS message awaits them. The legacy handset user will then know to download the MMS message via their computer or PDA from the relevant website. As a guide sending an MMS message will cost the user from 20p for a photo message and typically 50p for a 10 second video message.
